Howling in the Rain

It was a dark and stormy Tuesday night when I set out for the the UoT campus – to be honest the storm was done – but the streets where wet and it was night – when I set out for the CIUT studio at Hart House. I’d been asked by Valentino Assenza to join him on HOWL to talk about this blog. When he ran Cryptic Chatter a fun part of the show was when he would talk for a few minutes with the features – now he has a whole show to do exactly that.

Hart House is scary

First up was satirist Jeff Cottrill talking about the release of his new spoken word cd “Nit Fenny.” I first heard Jeff at Cryptic Chatter so it was mini-reunion episode of HOWL. He’ll be touring Britain next month, even a gig in Wales. The cd is hilarious. He performed ‘Pitch’ from it. CIUT clearly needs zombies to put its current pledge drive over the top.

I followed him and fielded questions about why blog, what I blog, what I think of the TO poetry scene (answer to this will a Friday blog in the near future). I managed to plug Hot Damn! It’s A Queer Slam and my Secret Handshake show in the time I had plus read a piece (but not one from the upcoming show).

the exorcist’s TA will be right there

The last half of the show was given over to Nea Reid and Jamie Kasiama of HYP (Hamilton Youth Poetry) SLAM to promote Louder Than A Bomb which coming to Hamilton May 1-9. To some the fact the Hamilton has a poetry scene may come as a surprise, but even Hot Damn! included the Hammer in its slam circuit – sot here! If I wasn’t so busy I’d try to get there some of the Louder events.

Hart of darkness

Val is a great host, affable, informed and curious to know more. Oddly enough I was writing about the days of Cryptic Chatter not so long ago (My Renaissance Teapot) so when I got the call to do HOWL I was  not surprised 🙂 If you missed it you can listen to the show on line Hey, it’s never too late to donate to the CIUT pledge drive either.

because of time limits I only read one, short piece –

A Pillow For Your Heart

use this spoon

as a pillow for your heart

use this fork

as a map to your desires

use this moment

as a sign of providence

use this coffee mug

as a fresh start

us this chair

as a dream factory

use this opportunity

as an excuse to do more

use this laugher

as the next step upward

use this suitcase

as key to memory

use this snowball

as the love of your life

use this lap top

as the keeper of the flame

use this smile

as a sign post to move on

use this handshake

as the fulfillment of a promise

use this bed

as the collapse of civilization

use this protractor

as the window to rain

use this bus

as a memory of when you cried here

use this email

as a thirst quencher

use this opportunity

as a refusal to go back

use this kiss

as a demonstration of potential

use this book

as a doorstop

use this take out meal

as a confirmation of your hope

use this loss

as a chance to be free of me
