#Power to the #Poem

To end 2015 & start 2016 on a productive, creative note I decided to write a series of pieces, vaguely related, based on Unity’s Twelve Powers: faith, strength, discernment, love, power, imagination, understanding, will, order, zeal, elimination, life. Each is a live link if you missed one or want to read them again.

I enjoy the challenge of working with prompts. I also recognize the power of action – if I want to be more productive & creative I have to be more productive & creative. It’s not as if these were a big sacrifice in time – in fact it took longer to clean them up a bit, pick photos & blog them than it did to write some of them.

house02I did set some limitations on myself: no more than 10 minutes per power, no more than two pages each & most difficult – don’t turn anyone of them into story. My easy out is to use narrative structure – I wanted to wrestle some with these rather abstract ideals as opposed to writing a little tale to illuminate them.

house03I let the prompt suggest and inform rather than dictate where it lead me. Sometime sit the path was directly clear others are more tangental. I resisted the context where the prompts came from – Unity is a gentle Christian based source. I may not be a blaspheming heretic but I’m certainly no Christian either. I didn’t want these pieces to be overly religious or even directly spiritual. Mystical I can live with.house04

I’ve done very little editing to keep them ‘fresh.’ The result is some don’t have a sense of endings, others are ideas that haven’t been fully fleshed out. A few of them are relatively complete as they stand. More edits are possible if I think I’m going to perform them at some point but that seems unlikely as I’ve just about totally stopped doing open stages & no one seems interested in paying me feature.

The pieces are so fresh I don’t have a favourite but one I’m looking forward to performing eventually is:

if I’m optimistic

I’m delusional

if I’m negative

I’m realistic

if I’m critical

I’m being hard to get along with

if I’m agreeable

I’m a push over

if I’m winning an argument

I’m losing an opportunity

if I tell you

what I know

I’m being a condescending bully

an entitled asshole

if I keep it to myself

I’m a selfish obstructionist prick

if I do well

I’m a show off

who thinks he’s better than everyone else

if I don’t do well

I’m suffering from bad self-image

a self-defeating loser

if I’m neutral

I’m taking the easy way out

if I speak my mind

I’m pushy domineering

if I agree with you

I have to be on your side 100%

if I disagree

I’m the one holding you back

if I donate

I’m merely placating my guilt

trying to buy forgiveness

if I don’t extend forgiveness

I’m unreasonable

if I don’t get the picture

then I don’t deserve to be in it

if I’m out of here

I’m leaving you holding the bag

abandoning my responsibilities

if I don’t give a shit

you’ll just have to get over it
