On a team competition show, in which the team members change each week, the clear winner’s team lost a challenge & his team members voted him off the game – strategy over-rode ability. He was not pleased & he became a rare sore loser & didn’t hold back his anger. Reality show editing limited our experience of his ‘dismay’ so I’m sure his language wasn’t polite on his exit.

I say ‘rare’ because usually eliminated contestants claim to be grateful for the opportunity, for learning so much – occasionally one with cry while trying to keep a brave face. As noted I’m also aware of how editing works & so we are only see what the producers want us to see. I for one would like see less gratitude & more spite.

In the circus of American politics we have been getting the full panoply of sore losers over the past couple of years. Losers who blame everything except their own behaviour for not being elected. But those are ‘public’ events – human behaviour changes when there are camera.

Losing at Monopoly in the privacy of ones home is a different sense of losing, right. I’ve never been a good game player because I don’t like defeat, really! I doubt if there is anyone who does, mind you. I feel a sense of disappointing in my sense of self if my plants don’t do well. I know I am powerless over the weather, over animals, bug, that feast on them overnight, But part of me feels I’ve let the plants down. I’m just grateful there’s no with an android phones filming me when ever I’m replanting what the skunks have dug up grubbing for grubs.

Right Questions

Right Questions

what makes you think

I am hiding something

I don’t claim to be transparent

or that I am withholding

something of importance

<>

I’m not lying to you

so what makes you think

I’m hiding something

is it because

you are hiding something

<>

are you under the impression

that total honesty is authentic

that the truth

isn’t covering up something else

that I don’t have a right

to privacy

when I don’t tell you everything

<>

what you don’t know

isn’t hidden

you just have to ask

the right questions

and hope

I’m willing to answer them

I’m half-way a great book “Blood & Mistletoe” – a history of Druids in Britain – it tracks how the public viewed Druidism over the decades – going back to the few original historical references to them recorded by the Romans. Over the centuries those references have been extrapolated to such a degree no one really know if Druids even existed. What is the truth here? The book is fascinating.

Truth is what? What you want to hear or the facts? Politicians seems to believe the spin is more important than the facts. Is saving the ecology more important than saving the economy? They often even deny what they have been recorded saying. That’s what I meant becomes easier that transparency. Even when we see through them the truth becomes irrelevant to them. Or we are the ones who have filed to understand.

Understanding is often coloured by what people read into the truth – their lens can be unpredictable. Telling someone who asks what you think about, say, what they are wearing, becomes a trap – if you don’t like it you clearly don’t like them; if you say you do like it, you might be inviting a sexual harassment suit.

In American politics it seems that some of them are in it for attention – spouting options that are designed to get them attention – they don’t present reasoned, researched intentions to better the economy or the ecology but to to what … I’m not sure … retrain their grip on power? Does same sex marriage cause child poverty? Oh right, the Bible says, ‘sufferer the little children’ so child poverty is the righteous choice.

Election Fever

pull up a chair

Election fever runs high in Toronto – ha. I’m one of those who votes as soon as the advance polls open. I look at the lists of candidates I can mark an X for & only recognize those currently already holding an office. I look over a list of candidates running in other districts & am gratified at the diversity of names but none of them are familiar to me (not that they would be, right).

As far as I know I’ve received no flyers from any of the mayoral candidates. There have been no advertised ‘meet the candidates’ events – no glad handing at major Danforth intersections – no house-to-house campaigners (to whom I can complain to about the lack of lighting around the on-going Greenwood Station ‘upgrades’).

Oops we did get a visit by representatives of one, to put up lawn signs. They didn’t ask if there any local issues of concern to me. The one ward representative flyer that was shoved in our mailbox, sometime after 10 pm, was for someone whose top priorities were housing, business recovery, safety – when I flipped it over, there was a rant about the TTC infringing on a copyright! A conspiracy of false evidence & more.

I’m sure glad I couldn’t vote for them. I say couldn’t, because, I’m in Ward 29 – Toronto/Danforth; this candidate in running in Ward 14 – Parkdale/High Park. Though, on second thought, they probably would have made our city politics a little more interesting lol.

Our Glorious Leader

Our Glorious Leader

I won

I won

I’ve been elected

there’s no doubt about it

<>

yes the other candidate

got more votes

but you don’t understand

those are votes for the candidate

they didn’t want to see

lead the country

I got the least votes

which means the people

want me the least

least of all the slate

that’s how it works

it’s not my fault

the voters didn’t read the ballot

to mark an X for the one

they least wanted to see win

<>

my first act

will be to decrease spending

on education

so fewer people can read

because reading leads to understanding

as long as they can’t read

I’ll be able to lead

Some of you may recall a recent USA electoral kerfuffle in which even the winner wasn’t allowed the privileged of being acknowledged as the winner by the loser, who quickly became the whiner – no that’s not true, he was a whiner from the first time. He did win that first round but proved to be as bad a winner as he was a loser.

The united in the USA is dubious notion as each state is fiercely autonomous as demonstrated with the continuing & persistent lack of mask & vaccine uniformity – rules change from state to state. In some it is permissible for bars to ban anyone wearing a mask; in others you can’t enter a bar if you aren’t wearing a mask. How do you keep track? I guess there’s an app for that.

I sometimes feel the conflict comes from the ‘you can’t tell me what to do’ even if what is being ‘suggested’ is for the good of all. Or a sort of stubborn toxic male pride – you know the sort of pride that keeps men from asking for directions or from even looking at map. A real man is never lost he’s just not going where you thought he was going.

That’s the art of spin – where being lost becomes a matter of interpretation not what has happened. So losing an election is a misreading of the votes. After in editing drawing X through paragraphs, even pages, means it is to be deleted, discarded. So the fewer ‘x’ you get on the ballot the more people approve of you. Congratulations! Welcome our glorious leader.

Apocalypse Postponed

The covid pandemic hasn’t been like the post-apocalypse movies – you know, those end-of-the-world scenarios where panicked mobs take the streets to pillage stores & hunt down one another in the struggle for survival. At least not yet. People have gotten steamed up, some reactionary noisiness about masks, vaccines with finger-pointing blame & some calling out profit mongering. Let’s face it if the pandemic wasn’t making someone lots of $ it would be ignored.

People are confused by science. One day one of the vaccines isn’t safe for over sixty, then another day it is safe but not safe for under 50’s, or at least not safe if you female between the ages of 30-40, but now safe for over over 60’s regardless of gender. Were safety protocols rushed to get it on the market? No, that would never happen.

Here in Ontario the numbers are confusing & ultimately ignored. The number of vaccines given hasn’t brought the numbers of infected down, in fact it has gone up. The biggest jump has been in schools but we can’t close them because parents need to work now that more businesses are being reopened because we have to get the economy moving so the tax base is large enough to pay for the vaccines, or something like that.

The economy has to recover so politicians can be re-elected with enough of a majority that can protect the profit margins of those already making $ off the pandemic. You know those banks who get a fee every time you use your debit/credit card because most retailers no longer accept cash because cash is riddled with potential disease. You pay a fee & the merchant pays a fee – win/win for the banking industry. How much do they pay into the tax base?

I did get my vaccine as soon as my age bracket was allowed. Booked it on line but first entering my postal code, it directed me to the nearest temporary clinic where I continued the process with birth date, health card number & it was done. Took about fifteen minutes. I did that on a Saturday & appointment booked for Tuesday, 10:20 a.m. Got there on the Tuesday by 10, lineups moving fairly quickly. More registration confirmations etc. Got the shot by 10:30.

I was given the vaccine info after the shot. I got the Pfizer – apparently the #1 rated, so far. Sat for 15 minutes, was given a receipt for the shot, next one booked for July. No side effects not even the sore arm many have experienced. I’m not sure whose profit margin I have helped but at least I didn’t have to use my credit card 🙂

Poet in Theory

Being a poet, to most people is acceptable in theory, but when it becomes real – i.e. listen to this new piece or come to my feature – it becomes less interesting. In some ways a lot like being gay – many people accept it in theory but please don’t make it a reality by kissing in front of me, or especially the children

dreamer under the rim
dreamer under the rim

Today, in some countries, poets are considered so dangerous they are imprisoned. I can’t imagine that happening in North America. Though I wonder what is worse – physical punishment or a dismissive shrug of ‘who give a shit about a poet.’

a dream awakens
a dream awakens

I have the double whammy – gay poet. If my work isn’t political enough I’m not radical enough, if it’s too political I’m whining, if it’s too sexual I’m just another sad gay man talking smut and feeling sorry for himself.

I’ve also found that when guys on online ‘dating’ sites say they want to know more about me sending them a link to my youtube channel results in never hearing from them again. I guess being what I say I am is just too honest.

I’m not complaining just commenting – because ultimately it doesn’t mean shit to a tree anyway. I don’t write for acceptance, tolerance, approval or even for fame & fortune (I’m not delusional). I write because I write.
