Jazzy Han Har Har

Bo Hansson made a crossover foray in the early 70’s with his lp Music Inspired by Lord of the Rings. I was a Tolkien fan at the time, had read the books at least once & when I first heard this was expecting a sort of Celtic/Swedish sound with tambours, penny whistles stuff but instead it was a gentle, moody, jazz exploration of the Rings. I replaced that lp with cd in 2003. Almost meditative & forerunner of new age sooth. Pleasant & timeless.

Much more jazz, is trumpet Roy Hargrove’s Public Eye; Habana; earfood – which I have as stand-alones. I first heard him as sideman with the likes of Dave Brubeck, Christian McBride. I picked all these up, at different times, on sale at HMV. Solid jazz. Habana explores Cuban sound with a large group;

I have a chunk of sax player Eddie Harris on an mp3 collection that includes his Complete Jazz Sessions 61/62; as stand-alone From 68): Electrifying/Plug Me In; & back to the mp3 collection his 1969 lp Silver Cycles. At once time juke boxes would have several jazz recordings & Harris filled the bill with these tracks – all around 4 min, many versions of movie theme or standards – high quality cocktail jazz. The stand-alone is more of the same but with more explorative longer tracks. My first Harris was Silver Cycles which is an amazing early exploration of electronica & experimental jazz. Some track feature a wordless female quartet. I always loved it eclectic range of this lp. I added the Sessions when I found the 44 track collection on iTunes.

Also in this mp3 collection is Vinnie Burke’s String Jazz Quartet. One of my co-works in Sydney was a jazz fan & I first heard his lps of this – a couple of upright basses, cello, violin – no percussion beyond plucking & I loved it. I had an lp to cas dupe which I was happy to upgrade to mp3.

Here too is Mike Cuozzo’s Mighty Mike – fine easy jazz with some vibes for flavouring. As well as Marie-Louise Girod’s Last Year At Marienbad soundtrack. One of my all rime favorite movies with a an eerie organ soundtrack. I never expected to find this but there it was on iTunes.

Booker Ervin’s The Song Book is an lp to cd finally to mp3 that fits nicely in this collection. Ervin is Harris to the next level of jazz seriousness. For a modern touch there is Russell Gunn’s Love Requiem; Plays Miles Davis. Modern jazz but a fine trumpet player. I love his Davis homage.

Finally for a total change is Adam Rafferty’s Gratitude. Acoustic jazz guitar that isn’t challenging nor is it relaxation music. I heard his version of Stevie Wonder’s Superstition & track it down to this lp. makes a nice break from the ‘real’ jazz.

Latino Likes Dad

I am a liar. At my age it’s hard to admit to that, but it is true. Not a big liar, but there’s no such thing as being a little pregnant. I only lie about one thing, my age. Not that it is such a big deal in the long run, but if I can get away with 10 or 15 years younger than I am then I’ll do it. We live in an ageist culture. In the gay world it is even harsher. The older men get, the more they want bodies in the early ripe of life – those sweet young things between 20 & 30. Ask a 50 year old if he finds other 50 year olds at all attractive he’ll probably snort with derision.

When I come to attraction, age isn’t the key for me. Well-preserved is well-preserved. I’ve preferred men to young guys. Once they hit 35 they are about old enough for me – seasoned but not too bitter yet.

So I lie about my age because those guys at 35 aren’r ready for well-preserved, even when they claim to be, as they do on those web sites devoted to bringing older and their younger admirers together.

As they say the web we weave can get sticky, as I have different ages on different sites but so do some of them. I know what works where. Not that I get much action anyway, but the web has been more productive than bars clubs or sitting around coffee shop gleaming manically over a triple espresso. I hooked up with Juan from, I think, I Dig Daddies, which I can’t help but think of as I Dig Graves, but that’s another story.

His handle was LatinoLikesDad. His profile was straight forward. A couple of clear photos. Plus he contacted me. I like that. He arrived for our first playdate, on time & eager. Ditto for the second. He was in many ways just what I was looking for except he had strings, or rather wanted strings. He didn’t say that but I could tell. I on the other hand am what one would call polyamorous. The more love you invite the more you have to share. I am not a slut.

Not that I’m all that active. Quality has always been more important to me that quantity. More than one on the go always made me happy. Something I never hid from any of them. If they can’t deal with it such is life. But when I’m too old or too young I tend to take that personally for some reason. Such is life.

So this is be third time Juan & I date. This time a real date not just a clothes off, slobber on each other opportunity. A date is all foreplay and the more of that the better. Coming isn’t the point of sex, it’s the end of it.

Jan Garbarek and the Windharp

Jan Garbarek is another of those jazz players I discovered via ECM. Like many in the ECM stable he was sideman to many & also a solo leader, so I can’t recall where I first heard him. He is a sax player mainly soprano. I have him in various settings. In the collection are as Lp to cd transfers: Esoteric Circle; Dis, Circle; Red Lanta; Red Lanta/Herbie Mann. In an mp3 collection I have Places/In Praise of Dreams w: Eberhard Weber/Parker/Kitaro/El TrioTucked in other mp3 collections is his Dansere; Sol Do Meio Dia. As stand alones I have: Twelve Moons; Officium; Ragas & Sagas

Theses range from the free jazz of Esoteric Circles to the meditative Officium. His soaring sax sound is to distinct I can recognize it in works I have never heard before. At once time I would pick up anything he was playing on. Now I suspect I have enough 🙂 His playing is more ‘intellectual’ than swing or bop. He rarely displays the energy of Coltrane but never becomes as sappy as the, to me, unlistenable Kenny G.

He is also a master of sonic tapestry as in Dis which features the use of a Wind-harp that is played by gusts of wind coming in from North Sea, creating tones and overtones. How cool is that. On Officium he plays with the classical Hilliard Ensemble, on Ragas & Sagas he is joined by Pakistani musicians.

Not all of his work is this conceptual. But he has never been trapped by one genre or texture. Well worth searching out if you are unfamiliar. Dis is a good starting point, as is any of his work with guitarist Ralph Towner.

Larking About

No one was sure what it meant. The first order larks were positive this was a sign of unwelcome change. The first order robins, on the other talon, were certain that it boded only the best possible opportunities for all the creatures.

‘No. No. No,’ the larks bounced from branch to branch.

‘Yes. Yes. Yes,’ the robins jumped across the ground. ‘We have nothing to fear.’

‘Fear. Fear. Fear,’ the larks insisted. ‘That fear will unravel the nest of our safe lives here. Something must be done.’

‘Nothing must be done.’ the robins replied. ‘Nothing. Nothing. Nothing.’

‘Stop.’ a second string blue jay rasped. ‘This bickering isn’t going to get us anywhere. Does anyone know where it came from.’

‘Cat. Cat. Cat,’ the larks warned and the birds dispersed.

A quick fragmented scattering of black, red and blue dots lifted into to the air over the trees and settled on higher perches to wait until the cats left.

‘Well. Well,’ the orange cat purred to the grey puss with him ‘We still have our power.’

‘Not all have fled.’ The grey puss looked up into the tree.

‘Ah. A new nest? Let’s investigate.’ the orange cat sprung up. ‘Coming.’

‘No that’s fine. I’ll wait here for you.’

The orange cat clawed up the side of the tree to the branch where the nest was wedged.

‘It’s not nest. Just some toy that got tossed up into the air and landed here.’ The cat swatted it with his paw. One eye came loose. ‘Teddy bear.’

His claw got caught in the string. A tug, two tugs and it was more knotted up. He yanked and the bear came loose and they both fell to the ground.  The grey puss streaked under the gate.

The orange cat shook himself free, paced the yard, rubbed its scent where it was fading and curled up under the tree. Not asleep. Just waiting for those robins to come back. Tasty treats they were. Robins. Yum.

‘See. See. See.’ the first robins began. ‘It has brought us luck. No cat has ever climbed so high before.

‘We should have attacked when they fell.’ the blue jay pecked in the direction of the cat. ‘We would have no trouble ending its life. All of us could have attacked at once. But we’ve lost our chance.’

The orange cat stretched out in the sun its head on the teddy bear’s stomach.

‘See. See. See. They are accomplices. He will never leave. We will have to find new homes.’

Caliente! (Snot)

Next on the jazz shelf are a couple stand alone cd’s that capture the ‘span’ of jazz. First we have Batidos: Olajope – for a time there was wave or sample/studio/dj/hiphop mash up of latin music & jazz. I picked this up, 2nd hand, back in October 2002. Funky, propulsive and great for sex.  Batidos is a sort of smoothie & this music is smooth but with a bit of spice at the same time.

melting toooooo slow

The other end of this ‘span’ is Gato Barbieri with “Caliente!” (bought March 99) and the double cd “Latino America” (bought November 99). Caliente! is a modern classic: very sensual, moody and nearly easy listening. Nearly expect Gato’s sax sound is restless, almost abrasive. Produced by Herb Alpert the recording goes back to 1986 but the music is timeless.

melt faster please

I remember, when I was studying dance, that this was a favorite of one of our teachers as the music allows for some slow then fast movement & lots of opportunity for that outstretched arm and hand gasp for the sweetness of the beyond.

snow bound sprig longs for spring

Latino America is a re-release of Gato’s first two Impulse lps with a load of outtakes, alternate takes & unreleased metal recorded at that time. More aggressive than Caliente! this is a strong set grounded more deeply in the Latin sound. Gato’s searing sax rides beds of exited percussion relentlessly and at times one wants him to not try to hard. But I’ve never really minded a Latino who was too hard 🙂

Snot: A Buyers Guide

A Newsletter Presented by the Snot Happy Institute of America

In the past decade snot had quickly become a mainstay of the American diet yet many still don’t know even the basic rules of purchase, storage or cooking of this nutritious, all natural, vitamin and mineral packed food.

In cool climes winter is the best time to purchase fresh snot. The staff of the better suppliers will be ready to produce, hock up, snort out, dig out fresh quantities of lugers when you need them. The Deluxe suppliers can be relied upon to have active accounts with most day cares.

Snot is best stored in air tight containers at room temperature till ready for use. This holds true also for dried snot. Refrigeration can prolong the mineral content but it loses it savoury tang if chilled for too long.

Here’s a recipe sent to us by a Happy Snot consumer:

Stuffed-Up French Nose Bread

3 three-ounce packages dried snot

1 can anchovy fillets, rubbed with snot

1 tablespoon chopped sour snot

2 teaspoons chili snot

1 teaspoon runny onion

1 teaspoon Worsnotcherster sauce

3 sneezes Tabsacsnoto

Mucus to taste

1/2 cup butter, at snot temperature

1/2 cup minced crusty tissues

1 tablespoon fine, soft drippy snot

1 long loaf French Nose bread

1. Snot Cheese: Cream the three-ounce packages dried snot until smooth. Add the snot rubbed anchovy fillets, chopped sour snot, chili snot, runny onion, Worsnotcherster, Tabsacsnoto sneezes and mucus. Thin to a stiff spreading consistency with liquid from the snot rubbed anchovy or chopped sour snot container.

2. Crusty Tissue Butter: Cream the snot temperature butter, add the minced crusty tissues and soft drippy snot and mix.

3. Split the nose bread lengthwise and remove the center. Spread the entire nasal cavity of the upper half with crusty tissue butter. Stuff the nasal cavity of the lower half with the snot cheese mixture, piling it up so when that when the top half of the nose loaf is pressed over the lower half, the entire nasal cavity will be stuffed up. Wrap in foil and freeze. Run through a spaghetti press and serve in long round thin slices.
