These telephone poles are just north of the Danforth along Greenwood Ave., in front of Danforth Tech. I usually don’t walk along the west side of the street so didn’t notice this art installation until earlier this year. All are on the north side of the poles so motorists will see them. From the weathering of the wood they have been here for some time.
Most of these are ornamental statues that are meant to be more than decorative. All are meant to either attract good luck or repel bad luck. I see various sizes of the Chinese lions more often than the others. The courtier is a one-of-a-kind outside a hotel in Stratford, Ontario.
Took a stroll through Kensington Market this past week. The last I was there was early last March to do a feature at the Secret Handshake Gallery. Then the pandemic shutdown took over. I was dismayed at the number fo closures but many of these merchants were already being squeezed out before covid. It’s becoming a hive of pot dispensaries.

the obscenity
of carnality on stage
was too much
for the male powers that be
when she wouldn’t back down
they shut her down
sent her to prison
sentenced her to becoming
the top box office draw of the decade
despite being a woman
her success
didn’t silence her censors
it only made them more eager
avid
to teach her a lesson
to be obedient
to shut her mouth
watch her words
or they would snip the words
so only the censors heard them
so she
took her money to the bank
& bid the public
good bye

Psycho Zombies in the Rain
it was raining ballerinas
you know
rain so heavy
each drop created a splash tutu
as it landed
on its one toe
to join the corps du puddle
a literal rain dance
wet ragged gene-mutated zombie
staggering down the street
skin stinking in the rain
crumbling for the lure of brains
grabs a light pole
flings aimless decaying arm
drops into the gutter
eyes washed but not cleaned
lightening strikes
the unlucky char
washed down the sewer drain
the rain not a sheet but a curtain
a shower curtain
lightening cuts through it
an electrified knife
stab stab after stab
screams drowned out by the rain
rain so heavy
we can’t see across the street
can’t see
through the car window
wiper blades not cutting it
smearing rain like blood
on a steamy bathroom tile
There was a flurry of mash-up horror movies & books ie: Pride & Prejudice & Zombies; Abe Lincoln: Vampire Slayer. I have a friend who does a piece about Hollywood adding zombies to anything to make it more commercial. Try it by adding Zombie to any movie title: Beach Party Zombie Bingo – Zombie on A Hot Tin Roof – Three Zombies Outside Ebbing, Missouri – actually these three sound pretty interesting 🙂
The title of this piece is clearly a reference to Singing in the Rain. In particular the rain sequence with non-mutated Gene Kelly splashing in puddles, swinging from a lamp pole at one point. Not that zombies are ever agile enough to dance & I’m not sure how they cope with rain either – being rotting corpses after all. The rules for zombies morphs from movie to movie. I’m not sure how long they live if they don’t eat brains. 
As Kelly swings on the lamp the camera picks up on his huge eyes full of hope & love. Eyes so clear that have to be a special effect 🙂 I can see this moment so vividly. I imagine it as a limited edition lamp hmmm – get the Franklin Mint on the line. ‘unlucky char’ echoes one of the songs from the movie: lucky star.
The Psycho of the title comes from the sheets of rain which naturally bring to mind a couple of scenes in Hitchcock’s Psycho. Janet Leigh driving in the rain mashed up with her shower scene unprepared for the rain of stabbing. She’s not singing in the shower.

For the first time my local stretch of the Danforth – from Greenwood to Coxwell – participated in Nuit Blanche. There was nothing between Greenwood & Linnsmore. In fact there was no Blanche on the southside of Danforth until one got to the Roberston Parkette where there was a long set of tables for an early scrabble game.
The bulk of the action was along the north side – with musicians, window displays & lots of people taking photographs.

Two stand alone’s next on the pop shelf: first – The Cars: Heartbeat City. Oh yes, the early 80’s American pop – not be confused with rock i.e. the Ramones – not disco – not Brit romantic ego – but good old USA radio video fodder. Without MTV I don’t know if this band would have hit what heights it hit.
They were established before this CD hits the market but it was the Andy Warhol video for Hello Again that pushed them to the top. State of the art at the time the visuals were funny, the music was energetic and fresh. Drive was another smash that owes a lot to the visuals but the song has a lief without them. Though if Celine Dion covers it is it merely middle of the road after all. But that does mean she, or her producers, have better taste than I give them credit for.
The cd holds together well. Tightly written songs though it is clearly of the early 80’s in studio sound. I didn’t pick it up until 2010 mind you more for memory than because I was a Cars fan. I paid $4.99 for it at HMV. Remember buying cd’s? 
After them on the shelf is Johnny Cash: The Hits – on Mercury. I mention table because there so many versions of his hits. I picked this up way mack in 1998 because I wanted Ring of Fire & I Walk The Line. I think I had seen documentary about him & versions of these were included. I love the lyrics so searched them out.
What surprised me the most was the TexMex horns on these songs. He must have recorded these songs different times with different arraignments. I have done no research so can’t tell you if these are the original singles that I recollect hearing not he radio growing up or what but they are fine.
The cd is a a good introduction to Cash & also to country music of that time. There’s isn’t a lot of this sort of music in my collection either & what is has been added in the last few years. As a teen I hated country western music but now have no dislike for it but no real interest either. I walk that line comfortably.

Each love is a different opportunity to experience and grow with another person. Sometimes not in the ways our dreams would want but always in the ways that God allows.
So many opportunities slip by when we stay stuck in our dreams and often those opportunities can out last the dream if we are open to them.
Thanks for being one of my opportunities, for being someone who has left my dream far behind and given me a reality far deeper and richer than anything I might have imagined in the first place.
